Butchering Day

I am so dang proud of these things!

This is the 3rd year and I always wake up with a bit of an uneasy feeling in my stomach about what the morning is going to bring. I feel like if you didn’t have that feeling though, you might be a serial killer or something. I think its just human nature. It sure does feel good though when they are all done and on their way to the freezer.

This year I started out with ten and ended with ten. I didn’t lose any. I have learned that it is an art to get them all to processing day without dying. I learned a little trick from the Hutterite Colony up the road, if they are kept in a darker room they tend to not move around so much, making it less likely that they’ll flip over and die. I think a major part to that also though, is not overfeeding them. I let them go to 7 weeks this year and I am satisfied with their size.

I am proud to be a women who can grow and harvest my own food. I think it is a skill everyone should learn.
